Vic (Victor) Hunt was well known to musicians and punters alike in the Geelong and surrounding area and throughout Victoria and interstate. He was one of the founding members of the Sleepy Hollow Centre at 3YYR community radio station from 1991-1993. Known for his “Against the Wall” Trade Union radio show and then later “Fishing Family Style”, he was one of the founding members of the Sleepy Hollow Blues Club in Geelong. Vic was the inaugural President dedicating three years to that position after which he continued to be closely involved with the club.
His love of music was evident in every aspect of his life and his passion and enjoyment for performing, whether on stage or as part of a campfire jam session with friends and a few drinks, leaves wonderful memories.
Vic played in many bands over the years. Just some of those included - Blue Mountain String Band, Strait Snakes & The Standards, Grizzly Bros, 4.3 Bandinos, Momma Don’t Allow, Mallee Roots, ‘Ard at Work, Stringybark McDowell Trio, Pot Boilers with Jeff Lang & JP, and Captain Logan as well as playing in Jazz, Irish and many other Blues bands – and no music or instrument seemed a problem for him. He could play harp, bass, guitar, jug and didgeridoo – and who could forget his vocals – or two of his famous songs - "Red Necked Mothers" (His Union standard - sung at every Union event ) & good old "Back to Ballarat" - If only he had recorded them!!
His love of music he taught to his students and his encouragement and help to young musicians is something he will always be remembered for. The annual Music Awards were set up as a memorial to Vic so that his passion for helping others will live on.
Vic Hunt died tragically in a rafting accident in northern Tasmania on the 19th May 2003. He was aged 56. |
